Bodiam Castle

Sussex

The National Trust

Bodiam Castle was begun in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalngrigge, a soldier of fortune. It reflects his power and wealth.

Debate continues over whether it was a fortress or grand house or both.

Its setting was elaborately landscaped with the moat and numerous pools, whose banks and dams can still be seen.

In 1926, Bodiam was left to the National Trust by Lord Curzon.
